Just north of Oakland, the town often referred to as "The
People's Republic of Berkeley" thrives on its liberal image, though it's
drastically tamer than it was in the 1960s. Radical Berkeley has grown up, and
is now as famous for the free-range chicken at Chez Panisse restaurant, a shrine of California cuisine,
as it is for having been the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement.
Although the University of California dominates Berkeley's
history and contemporary life, the university and the town are not synonymous.
The city of 100,000 has other interesting attributes. Berkeley remains
culturally diverse and politically adventurous, a breeding ground for social
trends, a continuing bastion of the counterculture, and an important center for
Bay Area writers, artists, and musicians
Academia, counter-culture and haute cuisine. Best known for the
university and 1960s student unrest, Berkeley is now a magnet for foodies and
yuppie shoppers. Telegraph Avenue's colorful wackiness is balanced by Berkeley's
vibrant arts scene.
